What is Mediation Week?
Mediation Week is a DCA and HMCS sponsored campaign to raise the awareness of the availability and benefits of mediation as an alternative to Court.
There will be a number of events, centred on County Courts, in the weeks commencing 24th October and 31st October to raise the profile of mediation.
The Department has been working with a wide-range of contacts throughout the mediation community in order to put on a wide range of activities: both civil and family mediation providers, Consumer groups, the Civil Justice Council, the Civil Mediation Council, the Law Society, the Bar Council, as well as Mediation UK (covering community mediation).
'In support of Mediation week, the National Mediation Helpline providers have agreed to offer discounted fees. Mediations emanating from calls received to the Helpline (0845 60 30 809) or via the website during the period of 24 October to 4 November 2005 will receive a 25% discount on the normal mediation fee.'
Why is Mediation Week being held?
The purpose of Mediation Week is to increase awareness of the significant benefits that mediation can bring to all sectors of society, and that irrespective of the problem, mediation can resolve almost any type of dispute. It also seeks to improve knowledge and acceptance of mediation amongst all the key stakeholders in Civil Justice, in particular, court users, the Judiciary, and the Legal Profession.
Mediation Week is being held to:
- Raise the profile of ADR/mediation amongst the key target groups: the judiciary, legal professions and court users
- Promote the benefits of mediation
- Overcome any entrenched resistance to mediation
- Promote the benefits of early settlement
- Enable courts to offer a broader range of advice and assistance to court users
- Increase consumer choice and satisfaction for ADR options
- Advance the Department’s key target PSA 5 (SR2004) – promoting alternative dispute resolution
