Tariffs
On 25th June 2002 Tariffs were replaced by Minimum Terms. To

When a person is convicted of murder, a sentence of life
imprisonment is mandatory; but it is well known that, in this context, 'life'
does not usually mean life. Murderers are released from prison only when
they
have served a period considered necessary to meet the requirements of retribution
and deterrence, and have then been assessed by the Parole Board as no longer
posing a risk to society. Tariffs are these periods that must be served
before the Parole Board considers that individual for release.
