Oath taking

When selected for a trial you will be asked to take the oath. Before you go into the courtroom court staff will give you a choice between the two equally valid procedures of making an affirmation or swearing an oath.

If you wish to swear an oath, you will be informed about the availability of different holy scriptures available in court. Should you wish to do this you will be invited to identify the holy book on which you wish to swear. You can contact the court beforehand if you would like to check the availability of a particular holy book. You can also bring your own copy of your holy scripture to court. Please also inform the usher if you prefer the oath to be read out for you to repeat.

You can also take an affirmation, for example:

‘I do solemnly, sincerely and truly declare and affirm that I will faithfully try the defendant(s) and give a true verdict (true verdicts) according to the evidence.’
