Witness Care Units
Witness Care Units exist across England and Wales. These units manage the care of Victims and prosecution witnesses from the point at which the defendant is charged through to the conclusion of the case and are staffed jointly by representatives from the Police and Crown Prosecution Service. It should be noted that these Units, however, are not based on court premises. The Units provide the following services:
- A single point of contact for victims and witnesses, i.e. this means that you will be allocated a named officer, who will be your point of contact for all communication throughout the case, steering you through the criminal justice process and co-ordinating support and other services for you;
- A full needs assessment for all victims and prosecution witnesses where defendants have pleaded not guilty. This helps to identify specific support requirements, such as child care, transport, language difficulties, medical issues and to highlight areas of concern, i.e. if you feel that you may be subject to intimidation;
- A continuous review of your needs throughout the duration of the case; and
- Greater communication with you about your case including informing you of the outcome.
If you are a Victim or Prosecution Witness and you have not yet been contacted by a Witness Care Unit you should speak with the police who will put you in touch with the nearest Unit.
