Disclosure of Information from the Police in Family Proceedings
Following a successful information-sharing pilot between the police and the family courts, which took place during 2004/05, the Association of Chief Police Officers (ACPO) asked all police areas to implement an information-sharing protocol with the family courts from April 2006. It is intended that each police force should have a protocol in place that will
- Provide timely advance notice to the police of the existence of family proceedings and level of information being sought.
- Enable the police to indicate in advance what evidential material is or may be available and highlight any difficulties with disclosure of the information required.
- Assist the court and the parties in framing workable, standard directions directed to the police without undue delay.
- Encourage early disclosure of full and frank information between the police, the parties and the Court.
